Performance
- Crime is down by 8.5% across the Borough for the period April to November with 3939 crimes recorded compared to 4307 last year; this is 368 fewer victims.
- There has been a 9.5% reduction in the number of people in Rugby Borough who have suffered an injury as a result of an assault, with 351 victims in the last 8 months compared to 388 in the same period last year. This equates to 37 fewer victims.
- So far this year, there have been 34 fewer homes burgled, with 230 crimes recorded compared to 264 crimes lst year. This is a reduction of 12.9%
- Since April there have been 469 vehicles stolen or broken into, this is 65 fewer than the 534 in the same period last year, reducing the risk of being a victim of vehicle crime in Rugby Borough.
- During November, the local police have completed 18 activities identified by the local community forums, the residents of Rugby. These related to anti-social behaviour and protection from harm issues and activities that will build confidence.
- Within the area identified as the Priority Policing Area, all crime has reduced by 56 crimes, with 2023 crimes compared to 2079 crimes between April and November 2009. This is a reduction of 2.7%
- So far this year, there have been 18 fewer vehicle crimes, with 153 crimes recorded compared to 171 crimes last year. This is a reduction of 10.5%
Police Activity and Incidents of Note
- On 18th November 2010 male (Michal CASH) was arrested after a stop search of his vehicle on the A426 in Rugby. 4.99 kg of amphetamine were found in the vehicle. The defendant was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. He was then conveyed to Rugby police station where on search approximately £1,200 was found and on the 19th November under Section 295 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 was granted for continued detention of the cash. A further restraint order under the Proceeds of Crime Act was issued for £8000 in a bank acc, Mercedes van, approximately £5000 pending the court result the restraint will then be pursued for further investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
- Detection and arrest of two armed robbers, one for the crime on Lawford Road at the Murco garage. The offender held a knife to the throat of the ip and took all the money from the till - £540 and a packet of 20 cigarettes. Offender arrested by Rugby police and charged with the offence. The second was for the service station in Dunchurch whereby the offender attended the store with his face covered and wearing blue plastic gloves. He then brandished a handgun and demanded money from the counter. Staff activated the alarm and offender left with no property. While CID officers were investigating the crime the offender walked in and was promptly arrested.
- Officers and fire crew were called to Steeping Road, Long Lawford on Sunday 9th January 2011 at 21:58 to a male that was on fire in the street. As officers attended there was also a vehicle that was on fire. It transpired that the male had gone to his ex-partners address and then proceeded to set fire to his vehicle with himself inside. An investigation by Rugby CID has confirmed that there are no other persons involved in the incident.
- The Crown Court trial of the youth charged in connection with the deaths of two elderly Rugby residents in a house fire approximately 12 months ago is currently underway at Birmingham Crown Court. At the time of the original incident, national media coverage gave a very negative image of Rugby particularly in relations to gangs. Media interest in the trial is low at this time, however it is being carefully monitored by partner agencies.
- During December and early January a series of burglaries at private houses in the New Bilton area of Rugby occurred. A police operation was implemented, resulting in a 13 year old male being arrested and charged with 9 offences.
- A police operation to tackle an organised crime group involved in the supply of Class A drugs in Rugby has led to the arrest of 9 persons with 4 being charged with drug related offences.
